Medford Transcript: Medford City Council, residents slam pay-to-park program for second straight week

  • Medford City Council, residents slam pay-to-park program for second straight week

Several city councilors agreed the city should have held more public meetings about the program before it kicked off Jan. 5.

They also demanded Mayor Michael J. McGlynn show up to a council meeting to answer residents’ questions.

“He’s the one that should be here

answering questions,” said City Councilor

Robert M. Penta, prompting applause

from  the audience.

Instead, Medford Police Chief Leo A. Sacco Jr. and Republic Parking official Daniel Nash fielded questions from the council and residents.

Nash announced Republic would begin enforcement (ticket writing) Thursday, Jan. 15.

West Medford business owners said they’ve already seen a slight drop off in business since the kiosks were installed. DJ Dabenigno of Dabbs Lock said, once live, he fears the pay-to-park program will do “irreversible damage” in the “blink of an eye.”

Council Vice President Lungo-Koehn calls for Weekly Meetings at City Council if necessary

Lungo-Koehn calls for weekly meetings on Pay-to-Park - if need be - Medford Transcript

Article on Breanna taking over the Vice Presidency of the
MEDFORD CITY COUNCIL

“What the council wanted [in a parking program] was something to benefit the businesses,” she continued. “I, in no way, want it to hinder the businesses.

If we have to talk about it every Tuesday, then we do it.

I’m brainstorming now how to address the concerns and how to make the appropriate changes.” - See more at: http://medford.wickedlocal.com/article/20150114/NEWS/150119333#sthash.KHdEG7wI.dpuf

Councilor Penta's article on Pay to Park

ROBERT M. PENTA: Medford

business owners must act to

protect customers, employees -

If the mayor owned a business, had employees, had to pay for the electric, gas, workers comp, insurance, water/sewer bill, provide sick and vacation time, maintain building/renter and vehicle upkeep, he would have a better understanding why a small business man/women is at issue.

But fortunately for the mayor, he has never had to do this while he derives a yearly city salary of $142,000 at the taxpayer’s expense.

Business owners need to mobilize

and demand a hold off

implementation of this new

program until all concerns are

readily addressed or consider some

type of legal action.

member of the Medford City Council.

No where do I see anything about the fees they charge if you use a debit/credit card. I recently went to get my resident parking permit and was told that if I didn't use cash I would be charged $3.50 for a $10.00 permit!!! I went and got cash, does anyone really know how much cash is coming in and how many permits are issued, I doubt anyone is looking at it that close.

That leads me to my water bill and the surplus the city is holding onto, I want a refund, you have no right to over charge me and not return my money. And if you think you will be successful with this parking thing like Somerville, you have a lot more work to do, like bringing in places to Shop and socialize and Bars etc...this is not Somerville, no matter what you think Mr. Mayor...

Are Harrisburg's higher parking rates scaring away customers?

http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2014/07/are_harrisburgs_higher_parking.html

In the beginning, people complained that Harrisburg's higher parking rates and fines would hurt businesses by deterring customers from visiting the capital city.
Have increased parking costs impacted your downtown Harrisburg experience?

On Thursday, PennLive learned that Zia's at Red Door, a restaurant on Second Street, is closing Friday. The owner blamed parking as one of several factors in the restaurant's demise.
